It is one of four terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus and Earth are the other three) in our solar system, meaning that it is made of rock. Mars is smaller than Earth and has a surface area of about 28% of the Earth. This is equivalent to all of the Earth’s dry land.

The surface is mainly made from basalt with a fine layer of dusted rust (similar is texture to talcum powder). The rust, made from iron oxide, is what makes the planet look red.
